City of Melbourne:

The City of Melbourne is located along Florida’s Space Coast approximately 1 hour south of the Kennedy Space Center and 1 ½ hours due east of Disney World, in Brevard County.

It is conveniently located along Interstate 95 at exit 183 east; the Beeline Expressway and State Road 192 run through Melbourne to the beaches. Direct access to the Atlantic Ocean is through several inlets and the Sebastian Inlet at the southern end of Brevard County.

The majority of Melbourne is located on the Florida mainland protected by the barrier island and the Indian River Lagoon. The mainland is connected to the island by way of two four-lane, high-rise bridges – the Melbourne Causeway and the Eau Gallie Causeway.

The Space Coast is known as a high-tech center of the Southeast. Major employers in the Melbourne vicinity include:

Melbourne International Airport, Harris Corporation, Rockwell Collins, Northrop Grumman Corporation, GE Transportation Systems, Rossi Electronics, Florida TODAY (Gannet) Newspaper, Florida Institute of Technology, Brevard Community College and Holmes Regional Hospital.

Melbourne promotes economic development and is actively engaged in revitalization efforts in three areas of the city. Information and assistance is available from the Planning and Economic Development Department. The Melbourne metropolitan area has been ranked as one of the most affordable in the nation for homebuyers in a survey by the National Association of Home Builders. The 1998 "Money" Magazine 'Best Places' survey rated Melbourne and Brevard County 7th among medium-sized Southern communities.

The City of Melbourne was created as the result of a merger of Melbourne and Eau Gallie in 1969. The city is approximately 35.4 square miles with a population of about 75,000. City hall is located at 900 East Strawbridge Avenue, approximately one block west of U.S. 1 and U.S. 192.

Additional information regarding zoning, uses and development potential is available at the City Planning and Economic Development Department.
